Rigging for the KidSeattle, WA –- Back in January, while attending Mid-Atlantic Leather in Washington DC, Derek and I met this kid. He looked about fourteen running around in his little wrestling singlet and Converse high-tops. Not really our thing, but there was something about this boy. He was clearly thrilled to be surrounded by all the leather-clad men in the bar; energetic, inquisitive and a bit shy. He definitely brought out my predatory instincts. And, he was in the bar, so it stood to reason he was of age.

I caught him nervously casting a glance in my direction several times and noticed his fixation on the coils of rope on the carabineer attached to my belt. I've lost count of the number of boys those coils of rope have landed for me. I walked up to him, flashed a coy smile and ask, "So, you like rope?"

Turns out the kids name was Ben. He was twenty (yes, I inquired almost immediately) and he did, indeed, like rope very much. Derek and I spent the rest of the evening, and much of the remainder of the weekend with 'the kid'. We developed a pretty close connection in that time with Derek and I feeling a strong drive to take Ben under our wing and nurture his experience in the scene. It's a relationship that has continued through emails and long phone conversations since.

About a month ago, I convinced the kid he should come out to Seattle and spend a few days with me. He was a little anxious about coming out to see 'Papa Buff' – his terminology, not mine.

Side Bar: Okay, so I'm old enough to be the kid's father, but that doesn't make me his Daddy. Truth is, ours isn't a Sir/boy relationship though and I'm coming to recognized 'Papa Buff' might very well be my role in this kid's life. A while back I wrote about the nature of my relationship with Daddy Dave. It's a little unnerving to be taking on that role of 'elder, wiser, more experienced and capable man' to mentor this boy, but I guess all things come in their time.

Rigging for the KidBen arrived on Wednesday and we've have a most enjoyable time the last few days. In addition to a lot of talking and building trust, we've been doing some of my favorite activity... rigging.

The kid has had some experience with rope bondage. It's one of his favorite activities, too. His familiarity, however, has been mostly limited to floor work and his only previous suspension scene included him being dropped from the rigging by the top... not the kind of thing that builds confidence. To improve upon this experience and help expand Ben's skills as a rope bondage bottom, I've been facilitating suspension scenes with the boy as teaching sessions.

The first was Thursday night. We began with a near suspension scene that I used to foster a discussion about the basics of bottoming to suspension scenes. Topics included: Communicating with Your Rigger; The Importance of Flexibility; Application of the Core Musculature; Regulation of Breathing; Endurance as a Factor of Extending or Limiting a Scene; and Engaging the Rope. Photographs from this session can be found in the gallery entitled Near Suspension Rigging for the Kid.

Then, last night we explored those topics again through some practical application with a full suspension scene. The kid did an absolutely beautiful job putting into practice the lessons from the previous night. And, I have to admit, he looked exquisite in the rigging. You can find the images from last night's session in the gallery entitled Full Suspension Rigging for the Kid.

For those of you interested in learning more about Ben and the experiences of a leather boy new to the scene, I encourage you to check out his blog, Ben in Leatherland.
